The BR*Tools are installed automatically on the database server in the directory usr/sap/<SAPSID>/SYS/exe/run.

We classify BR*Tools as functional, help, batch, and interactive tools.

BR*Tools

Functional –> BRBACKUP, BRARCHIVE, BRRESTORE, BRRECOVER, BRSPACE, and BRCONNECT –> Perform actions directly on database.

Help –> BRTOOLS and BRCONNECT à BRTOOLS is the menu program that can call all other functional tools interactively, BRTOOLS and BRCONNECT are also called internally, BRTOOLS is called by BRBACKUP, BRARCHIEVE, and BRRESTORE for backup, restore, and verification, BRCONNECT is called by BRBACKUP to monitor the database during a backup.

Batch –> BRBACKUP, BRARCHIVE –> Only run on their own in batch, without menus BRRESTORE, BRCONNECT

Tools for BR*Tools

Tool Purpose

BRBACKUP –> Backs up data files, control files, and online redo log files of the database.

BRARCHIVE –> Backs up offline redo log files.

BRRESTORE –> Restores data files, control files, and redo log files

BRRECOVER –> Recovers database files and restores profiles and log files.

BRSPACE –> Manages the database instance, space, and segments (that is, tables and indexes)

BRCONNECT –> Performs database administration tasks such as statistics update, check database system, adapt next extents, clean up logs and DBA tables. Functions as a help tool to monitor the database during a backup

BRTOOLS –> Displays the menus from which the other BR programs are called. Functions as an internal help tool started by BRBACKUP, BRARCHIVE, and BRRESTORE.

Introduction to SAP ROUTER

Saprouter examines any incoming data packets, checks the route and authorization and then sends them to their specified targets. The partner that sets up the connection specifies the route (from saprouter to saprouter and to the target). This procedure is known as source routing. If you want a connection, from a sapgui to an r/3 system for example, to run through a SAProuter, then you need to enter the route in the sapgui command line.
You can use saprouter if there is no direct ip connection between the communication partners. Saprouter must be running on a host that is connected to both ip networks. It can then receive data from the sapgui in one ip network and relay it to the r/3 server in another ip network, and vice versa. Normal ip routing is used between the application programs and the saprouters.
Connections established using saprouter have the additional advantage that no end-to-end connections between the participating system are necessary on network level. For example, if accessing a frontend pc on an r/3 server with an intermediate saprouter, it is not necessary to define the complete path between the two systems at tcp/ip level. It is
sufficient if both parties can reach the saprouter. From an sap communication viewpoint, this represents a point of concentration in your network that serves as a starting point for each subconnection.

Each subnetwork stored logically behind a saprouter is therefore reduced to the network address of the saprouter.

Without saprouter, the internet protocol (ip) addresses must be unique, which cannot always be guaranteed, particularly on international networks. With saprouter it is possible to connect two points that have unofficial, or even identical, ip addresses. Therefore, it is rarely necessary to adapt existing address topologies using official ip addresses. Sap online service & support now only supports saprouter connections due to these advantages. Because sap routes all accesses to internal systems (such as sapnet – r/3 frontend) and all service connections via saprouter, the connection between sap and the customer is reduced to a single saprouter – saprouter connection

Installation of SAP Router in Unix

1. Create the subdirectory saprouter in the directory /usr/sap/

2. Get the latest version of the SAProuter from the SAP Service Marketplace (service.sap.com/patches). Choose Support Packages and Patches ® Entry by Application Group ® Additional Components ® SAPROUTER. The SAProuter is in packet saprouter*.SAR; the program niping is also in this packet. Copy programs saprouter and niping to the newly created directory /usr/sap/saprouter.

If you cannot copy the programs from SAP Service Marketplace, you can copy a version (may be obsolete) from your directory /usr/sap//SYS/exe/run.

3. (Optional) If you want to start the SAProuter on the same computer used for an SAP instance, insert the following line into file /usr/sap//SYS/exe/run/startsap:

# Start saprouter

#SRDIR=/usr/sap/saprouter

if [ -f $SRDIR/saprouter ] ; then

echo “\nStarting saprouter Daemon “ | tee -a $LOGFILE

echo “—————————-“ | tee -a $LOGFILE

$SRDIR/saprouter -r -R $SRDIR/saprouttab \

| tee -a $LOGFILE & fi

Insert the lines before the commands to start the SAP instance.

Normally the SAProuter runs on a different computer. If this is so, this step is omitted and you start the SAProuter as described in Starting the SAProuter.

4. Maintain the route permission table in directory /usr/sap/saprouter. If you want to keep it in another directory or under a name other than saprouttab, you must specify this with the SAProuter option -R .

Installation of SAP Router in Windows

Raise on OSS for the registration of the hostname for the SAProuter, which has to be registered with the official IP.

Receive the conformation form SAP

You wil be received a PIN

The SAProuter directory is \usr\sap\saprouter

Set the environment variables for the SECUDIR and SNC_LIB

Download the SAP Crypto Library and unpack in the usr\sap\saprouter

Generate the certificate request by executing the command as below:

Sapgenpse get_pse –v –r (drive for ex :C or D):\usr\sap\saprouter\certreq –p (drive for ex :C or D):\usr\sap\saprouter\local.pse “”

Request the certificate from SMP/tcsàdownload areaàSAProuter Certificate

Create a file C:\usr\sap\saprouter\srcert and copy the requested certificate into this file. The run the command:

          sapgenpse import_own_cert -c CorD:\usr\sap\saprouter\srcert -p
CorD:\usr\sap\saprouter\local.pse

To generate credentials for the user that’s running the SAProuter service, run command:

sapgenpse seclogin -p C:\usr\sap\saprouter\local.pse -O
(this will create the file “cred_v2″)

Check the configuration by running command:
sapgenpse get_my_name -v -n Issuer
(This should always give the answer “CN=SAProuter CA, OU=SAProuter,O=SAP, C=DE”)

Create SAProuter service with the command:
ntscmgr install SAProuter -b C:\usr\sap\saprouter\saprouter.exe -p
“service -r -R C:\usr\sap\saprouter\saprouttab -W 60000 –K ^p:^”

Edit the Windows Registry key as follows:
MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SAProute
r\ImagePath –> Change both ^ to “

Start the SAProuter service

Enter the required parameters in OSS1 -> Technical Settings
